Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is available in SA from today.
The tablet runs on Android 3.1, Honeycomb and supports 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It features a 3MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera.
According to Steven Ambrose, MD at WWW Strategy, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not offer anything new to the market.
However, he says Samsung is perceived as more pervasive and accessible than Apple and he expects to see clever bundling packages, greater distribution and attractive prices.
Ryan Smit, digital lifestyle research manager atBMI-T,also believes that the tablet is likely to be bundled with cellphone contracts and this will attract customers because it means they do not have to cover the full cost straight away.
Smit points out that at the moment HTC, Huawei and Samsung tablets are being bundled with service contracts through the cellular providers, while the iPad is not.
Ultra-slim design
Smit believes the device will be one of the most advanced Android tablets on the market because of its high-level specifications and ultra-slim design. He adds that it features a dual core processor and a micro-sd slot, which the iPad lacks.
He explains that on the downside, the tablet is somewhat limited as there are not very many tablet-optimised applications currently available for Android Honeycomb.
Samsung says following the creation of a local content and application development team in June, the company will roll out applications that cater for the needs of South African smartphone users with projects including entertainment, education, and finance.
