Samsung Electronics SA says the Galaxy Tab S, its "thinnest and lightest tablet to date", has been launched.

The tablet boasts a Super Active Matrix OLED display, which Samsung says enables it to deliver "a wider range of rich and crisp colours". The WQXGA (2560x1600, 16:10), super AMOLED display delivers more than 90% of Adobe RGB colour coverage, and has a 100 000:1 contrast ratio, which provides deeper and more realistic images by making blacks darker and whites brighter, says Samsung.

The device also features additional Samsung screen technologies such as an adaptive display that intelligently adjusts gamma, saturation, and sharpness based on the application being viewed, the colour temperature of the viewing environment and ambient lighting. Users can also use pre-set to manually adjust the display settings for video and photo content.

Because the screen technology does not need a backlight, the tablet is more energy-efficient, adds Samsung.

"The tablet is becoming a popular personal viewing device for enjoying content, which makes the quality of the display a critical feature," says Justin Hume, director of product and integrated mobile at Samsung Electronics SA.

The tablet comes in two iterations, the 8.4-inch - at a recommended price of R8 500 - and the 10.5-inch, which should sell for R9 999. Both are 6.6mm thin and weigh between 294g and 465g, respectively.

Samsung's latest tablet, which follows the Tab 4 launched in August, also offers an ecosystem of "premium" content, including the debut of its magazine service, Papergarden, and a gift offering. Users will also have access to more than 15 000 Marvel comics through three months of unlimited, free membership.

The Kindle for Samsung gives Tab S customers a free book a month, and Samsung has also partnered with Google Play and Netflix - although the streaming service is only available in some countries.

Additional features include a multi-user mode that enables users to create their own personal optimised profile and is accessed through a fingerprint scanner. The S comes in a variety of connectivity options such as WiFi, or and long-term evolution, and is offered in white or titanium bronze.
