GameStop to sell tablets

The company plans to start selling tablets based on the Google Android mobile operating system during the holiday season at 200 of its US stores. GameStop's pilot programme will include specialised tablets made by Asustek Computer, Acer and Samsung Electronics.

According to Good E-Reader, the retailer has preloaded each of the tablet devices with seven games that include Madden NFL, Dead Space or the Kongregate Arcade video game.

“Customers have been telling us that they like to game on multiple devices. We believe there is a gaming opportunity on tablets,” said Paul Raines, CEO at GameStop.

The retailer has been branching out from its brick-and-mortar roots in recent months, as pressure from online game distributors like Stream and OnLive begins to be felt, PCMag states.

Earlier this year, GameStop acquired Impulse, a subsidiary of Stardock that provides a digital distribution service, and Spawn Labs, a developer of streaming technology. Impulse has in recent years had about 10% of the PC digital game delivery market, while Steam controlled a 70% share.
