Gaming tablet in the pipeline
GameStop president, Tony Bartel said recently: “If we can work with our partners and the OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] and they come up with a great tablet that is enabled with a great gaming experience and coupled with a Bluetooth controller, then there's no need to go out and develop our own.”
GameStop is also looking at Bluetooth controller compatible tablets.
According to GamrFeed, GameStop knows that games are big business these days whether it's hardcore gaming or even the casual demographic - the same demographic that mostly play games on their iPhones, iPads, and tablets.
GameStop has already started accepting trade-ins for tablets in five test stores in Dallas, Texas. To this end, GameStop also knows that Apple is the leader in the tablet market with the iPad, but that doesn't mean the company isn't ready to compete or look at its future.
The gaming retailer recently acquired Impulse, a subsidiary of Stardock that provides a digital distribution service, and Spawn Labs, a developer of streaming technology, says PC Mag.
This comes after the company was facing increasing pressure from online game distributors Steam and OnLive.
Impulse has in recent years had about 10% of the PC digital game delivery market while Steam controlled a 70% share, according to reports.
