Gap Inc, the world's largest international fashion retailer, has chosen Sun Microsystems and its partners to build an open, standards-based, cost-effective solution to run many business processes ranging from store systems support to headquarter applications through to distribution centres.
In its effort to provide a superior customer experience, Gap Inc strategically partners with best-in-class system and application suppliers. Gap Inc's infrastructure solutions are built on an architecture that provides both extensive and immediate functionality and great flexibility to grow over time.
"With this solution set Sun has proved that it can reduce time to deployment and improve performance for mission-critical applications," says Jan Dry, regional solutions and technology manager at Sun Microsystems SA.
Dry cites the company's strong relationships with its partners as pivotal in its choice for Gap to lower its total cost of ownership and leverage prior investments. "Sun's systems easily scale which can help Gap handle seasonal peaks and rapid growth," notes Dry.
Gap has implemented Sun Fire Servers, powering a variety of financial and back-end services, and Sun Enterprise Servers for retail data warehousing, merchandise planning system, and other supply chain applications.
Additionally, the clothing manufacturer has implemented a multi-year Platinum Contract with Sun Services for 24/7 support of the Sun Fire Servers to drive expedited implementation schedules and reduce risks.
Dry notes that globally Sun has clients in all retail segments, including soft and hard goods specialty businesses, discount and mass merchandisers, department stores, food service, grocery businesses, convenience store businesses, chain pharmacies, electronic retailing merchants, catalogue and home shopping.
"Fast-growing retailers are building their technology foundations on Sun Enterprise servers, Sun storage and Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) to deliver Java Web Services. Sun Services turn technology into value for its customers via choice and open, standards-based, secure integration across the retail enterprise," Dry concludes.
