Gartner questions PM standards

Analyst firm Gartner is taking aim at two recently revised portfolio and project management standards, saying they lack sufficient detail to be useful, states Search . But the standards author, the Project Management Institute (PMI), says the critique results from a misunderstanding about the purpose of the standards.

Gartner recently published two notes critiquing, and largely criticising, the two revised standards by the PMI, which provides information to project management professionals around the world and offers project management accreditations.

Late last year, PMI released a second edition of two of its standards, 'The standard for portfolio management' and 'The standard for program management', per the expectations of the American National Standards Institute.

PM helps with economic crisis

For organisations to survive the financial meltdown they must adopt the nine knowledge areas of project management, to enable them to do different things with different tools at the right time, reports Albawaba.

This was the assessment made by Rashid Alleem ahead of the first Project Management Congress in Sharjah, UAE.

Project management has grown into a vital tool for success in recent years. Driven by recent business trends such as fewer management layers, greater flexibility, and more project-based work, project management has abandoned its historic homes in the construction, engineering and aerospace industries to transform the service, financial, computer, and general management sectors.
