Gartner re-examines Q4 server figures
Analysts at Gartner have re-examined the server patient, and they can confirm it's still sick, reports The Register.
Last week, IDC released its numbers for Q4 and all of 2008, and now it's Gartner's turn.
Gartner reckons that global server sales plummeted by 15.1% in the final quarter of 2008, to $13.1 billion, with shipments falling by 11.7%.
No OS for AppZero's VAAs
AppZero is planning to showcase its tools for creating virtual application appliances (VAAs) at this week's Demo conference in Palm Desert, California, writes TechWorld.
In general, software appliances bundle an application with an operating system, allowing it to be deployed on hardware or as a virtual machine. But while AppZero's VAAs include the application's dependencies, such as configuration settings and executable code libraries, they leave out the operating system.
This provides customers with greater flexibility, said AppZero CEO Greg O'Connor.
WD doubles ShareSpace storage
Six months after the initial release of the WD ShareSpace NAS server that offers up to 4TB of storage, Western Digital is now ready to double the storage space of the device, states CNet.
The company said its WD ShareSpace network storage server now offers up to 8TB of capacity, DLNA2 media-streaming capabilities, and more importantly, up to 30% faster transfer speed.
This is really good news if the new WD ShareSpace offers the same speed as the recently reviewed My Book World Edition; it would be a huge improvement on its predecessor.
