Gateway appoints local MD

Johannesburg, 13 Jul 2007

Gateway Communications has named Geoff Hardwick as MD of its southern Africa operations. The appointment went into effect at the beginning of July.

Hardwick's role includes new business development and support for the existing base in the region, says a company spokesman. He reports to COO Mike van den Bergh, as do all of Gateway's other regional MDs, the spokesman notes.

"Gateway recently completed the commissioning of a new satellite earth station and acquired infrastructure as part of the GS Telecom transaction. Hardwick's role will be to rapidly grow this part of our business by responding to the massive customer demand for a high-quality African connectivity with local support," he explains.

Hardwick has over 25 years of experience in the South African IT industry, with the past 10 years spent in the vendor environment.

He joins Gateway from Blue Turtle Technologies, where he held the position of business development executive.

"Geoff is the ideal fit to strengthen and develop our offering locally and throughout southern Africa," says Van den Bergh.

"His background in service, systems and management is highly complementary to his new role, which involves growing the company's presence across the southern African region."

The company spokesman says the acquisition of GS Telecom means Gateway now has staff in 15 countries.

This increased the number of African regions reporting to Van den Bergh to four and made it necessary to appoint someone to head up the southern African part of the business, he says.
