The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) invested R106 million to build an ICT-ready school in Soshanguve, Pretoria.
The Soshanguve East Secondary School is the fourth new school to be opened by the GDE since July last year. The school forms part of the department's initiative to open modern township schools every month until 2019.
According to Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, the provision of schools with modern facilities in townships will improve the quality of education in townships.
"Our learners will get quality education where they reside. We are prioritising township education because we do not want our people to be exposed to technology or experience utilisation of tablets and computers for the first time at university."
The new school caters to 1 200 grade eight to grade 12 learners and has 30 classrooms, two science laboratories, a computer laboratory, IT control room, library, nutrition centre with dining hall and sport facilities.
Soshanguve East Secondary is a green school equipped with roof insulation and glazing that maximises natural light in the building and reduces energy loss. It has energy-saving lighting, rainwater harvesting and insulated walls for heat conservation.
Gauteng infrastructure development MEC Jacob Mamabolo encouraged Soshanguve community members to protect the school against vandalism.
"This is your school. You, the community of Soshanguve, have a responsibility to protect the school and promote the smooth education of our children. Should we ever hear that the school was burnt down, we will not build you another one," notes Mamabolo.
