Gauteng Govt awards R20m contract to the Mecer PC brand

Johannesburg, 30 Mar 2001

The Gauteng government has opted for local PC brand Mecer by awarding a R20 million tender for the supply of 1 800 workstations. The tender was awarded to nine suppliers, all of which are small businesses. The workstations will be used in the Gauteng Department. 380 of the workstations are equipped with Pentium 4 processors - the latest chip technology to be released by Intel.

According to Willem Viviers, director of the corporate development division of Mustek, the manufacturer of Mecer, this is by far the largest tender ever awarded by the Gauteng government for Mecer equipment.

"The fact that we were awarded the lion`s share of the contract indicates the government`s commitment to local technology. By awarding the tender to a number of resellers, and not a single supplier, the government is contributing to the growth of the PDI SMMEs sector, a concept Mustek Electronics fully support." The foundation of Mustek`s distribution channel rests on a nationwide PDI SMMEs reseller .

Viviers confirmed that the systems are already being delivered. Support, and maintenance will be provided by the suppliers, with Mustek providing second-tier support.
