A gang of armed robbers has stolen over 100 PCs from a Gauteng Provincial Government office in Johannesburg.
The Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment said in a statement today that a gang of about eight armed men forced their way into the offices on Saturday and tied up the two security guards on duty.
The men then raided 15 floors of the building, stealing computers, fridges and microwave ovens. "Our preliminary investigation shows that about 120 computers were stolen," the department says.
However, critical information and documents were not damaged or lost.
Agriculture, Conservation and Environment MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu says the biggest concern in relation to this crime is that the limited resources at the disposal of government for service delivery will now have to be diverted towards replacing the lost equipment.
"It is also a source of concern that time that would have been spent delivering services to our communities has been wasted - all thanks to these bandits. However, we expect that all staff members will be back at their workstations tomorrow."
