Gauteng schools reopened on 11 January but there are still 2 865 learners, whose parents applied online, who are yet to be placed.

The Gauteng Department of (GDE) says the number of unplaced grade one and eight learners whose parents applied online has been drastically reduced from over 7 000 to 2 865.

This as the department continues to face an uphill battle to place thousands of learners who are still not in school three weeks into the new school year.

"Of the people that applied late, 9 651 learners are placed. This brings the total number of learners placed in January 2017 to 65 651. Districts and schools remain in close contact to follow-up on queries from parents of unplaced learners," the department said in a statement.

However, late applications are still increasing daily, with the number growing to 18 327.

Gauteng schools opened for the year on 11 January but by 17 January there were still 19 913 unplaced grade one and eight learners. Of these, over 7 000 were learners whose parents had applied online for their placement, while over 12 800 were new applications through walk-ins.

The online applications were part of the GDE's new online registration system put in place last year to help facilitate applications for new grade ones and eights attending school in 2017.

The department says it is encouraged by the work of district officials in 62 operations centres and has urged parents to visit the centres for assistance.
