The Web site created by Gauteng's provincial department to allow parents to register their children for 2017 is back online after crashing on Monday.

At noon when ITWeb checked, www.gdeadmissions.gov.za was accessible.

The site initially crashed after it experienced "unforeseen technical challenges", the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said in a statement.

"The system seems to have crashed after experiencing over 600 applications per second," it said.

The GDE's online registration site was scheduled to coincide with the school registration process and went live on Monday, but users found it impossible to access it.

During the weekend, the department appealed to parents to use the online service to verify their details and apply for space for grade one and eight learners for the 2017 academic year.

Following last year's more than 30 000 late applications, the department sought to make learner registration tech-savvy, as well as minimise long queues during the registration period, and encouraged parents to make use of the Web site to register children.

The GDE launched the online application process to track admissions in all the schools, the applications and avoid duplications. The GDE's Web site also matches a learner with the school closest to their place of residence.

The department's site is also intended to act as a centralised database for planning and reporting purposes.
