Get into the virtual environment or be left behind

Johannesburg, 04 Dec 2008

Virtualisation is helping to address a few critical issues facing organisations throughout the world. Jim Holland, Axiz Product Manager: HP ESG, says when implemented correctly, virtualisation allows companies to be more flexible and agile, and receive a better return on their hardware investment.

"In my opinion, if you`re not thinking about a consolidation and virtualisation strategy, you`re going to be left behind. Making sure it will benefit your customers and yourselves in terms of ROI is another thing."

Holland says companies haven`t being getting the true performance and benefit out of their servers, thus the ROI has been in question. Virtualisation will assist in addressing this problem as it is designed to consolidate many applications onto a single server, allocating resources from the server to address the various applications at specific times. This maximises the server`s performance potential and ROI and, because the servers are consolidated, there is a significant reduction in power consumption as well as the power needed to cool the server room.

"Recent studies reflect an up to 40% reduction on power consumption when using HP servers and blade infrastructure products. Virtualisation puts more focus on improved manageability as you can now keep track of what`s virtual, physical etc. HP provides all the tools in assisting with this. Features like Systems Insight Manager, with add-ons for virtual machine management and migration tools to get from physical to virtual and back again, make HP the best choice when going this route."

HP`s ProLiant portfolio continues to evolve keeping pace with the rapid changes in the industry and continues to set the standard for the future. HP`s ProLiant DL380, DL385, DL585, DL580, DL785 and BL Blade infrastructure products are best in breed servers designed with performance, stability and manageability in mind. Many of these multi-core servers are leading the way in terms of performance in the virtualised environment, making sure that if a customer chooses to invest in virtualisation, they will have peace of mind in the performance of their hardware in supporting the various applications.

In recent testing, HP ProLiant servers and VMware were proven to provide organisations with a robust and reliable platform for virtualisation. The VMmark benchmark measures the key performance characteristics for virtual machines. The benchmark represents an end-user environment running multiple workloads, is platform neutral, and provides a methodical way to measure scalability so the same benchmark can be used across different hardware platforms.

The HP ProLiant DL585 G5 offers up to a 20% performance advantage when compared to other four-socket, 16-core competitors utilising VMware. With the VMmark benchmark result, customers can compare performance and scalability of different virtualisation platforms, make appropriate hardware choices and monitor virtual machine performance on an ongoing basis. And, they can be reassured the HP ProLiant DL585 G5 is the appropriate choice.

"Axiz has taken a significant stocking position on the full range of HP ProLiant servers and blade infrastructure products to be able to offer our customers the right server for the required application," Holland says. "Using our presales and product management expertise, we`re able to assist resellers with providing the right solution for their customers."
