Giant JVC jukebox debuts in SA

Johannesburg, 08 Feb 1999

Supply Chain Services, a national distributor of pharmaceutical, food and beverage products, has installed the first JVC MC-1600 400GB CD-ROM jukebox in South Africa as part of a comprehensive invoice archiving solution.

Distributed by Exsol, a partly owned subsidiary of the MGX Holdings group, the MC-1600 complements Supply Chain Services` existing optical disc and RAID systems on its national WAN.

Supply Chain Services` IT manager Alon Goren says the company has a legal obligation to store its delivery invoices for a minimum of five years.

"Since we generate 3 000 to 4 000 invoices a day, we needed a solution that eliminates physical storage constraints at the cheapest near-online price point available," says Goren. "We found the JVC MC-1600 the optimal solution for our business requirements and budget."

The 600-platter jukebox has 12 hot-swappable magazines of 50 cartridges, three CD-ROM readers and one CD writer. Fully loaded, the jukebox offers a cost-effective, near-online storage and retrieval medium at a cost of 30c/MB.

"Invoices that are scanned and stored electronically on the jukebox are readily available on our network," says Goren. "Documents are indexed and archived to enable rapid access from any of our branches nationwide, or any point in the world by remote access via the Internet."

The system is managed by SmartStorage, distributed and supported in South Africa by Exsol. Images are scanned and stored as part of a hybrid COOL/COLD/Imaging (online/near-online) solution, and maintained by Exsol.

Exsol technical director Amir Lubashevsky says the JVC MC-1600 is the most attractive system of its kind in the country.

"It can`t be bettered for reliability, robustness or speed at its price point," says Lubshevsky. "By replacing the readers and writer, it can further by upgraded to DVD technology, increasing its capacity up to 17-fold."
