St John's College in Mthatha, Eastern Cape received a R150 000 boost from GijimaAst after winning the 'Special Consistent Improvement Award' at the Most Improved School Awards Ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Pretoria at the beginning of March.
Hosted by the Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, with special guest of honour, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka delivering the keynote address, the awards are aimed at recognising schools that have demonstrated the most improvement in the categories of:
* Home Language and English 2nd Language
* Excellence in Mathematics
* Overall Consistent Improvement
GijimaAst sponsored the main prize to the value of R150 000. "Education forms an important part of GijimaAst's CSI investments and there is a strong philosophy within our company of investing in South Africa's future leaders in order to create a pool of competent and entrepreneurial successors to lead the way forward, particularly in the fields of information and communications technology," says Thoko Mnyango, Group Market Development and Strategy Executive for GijimaAst.
St John's College was established in 1879. In the 2006 Senior Certificate examinations the school achieved a 96% pass rate with 86 endorsement passes out of a total of 262 learners, an increase of 52 endorsement passes from 2004. In addition, the college increased its total passes to 262, almost double that of the 140 candidates from 2004. The key objectives of the awards are to recognise and acknowledge schools that are performing well and have achieved good results; recognise and acknowledge schools that are showing consistent improvement and highlight successes and identify possible role models in a manner that will benefit all learners.
