Global demand boosts server sales
A recovery in global demand boosted second-quarter sales for computer servers by 11% to $10.9 billion, says an IDC report, states CNET News.
Those numbers represent the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales growth and the fastest quarterly growth in the server market since 2003, according to the firm.
Server shipments also rose 23.8% from 2009's second quarter, a slight increase from the 23% gain seen in the first quarter but the fastest quarterly growth in more than five years.
Chip maker eyes server space
ARM, processing chip maker for most mobile phone and other small devices, is apparently taking aim at the server space, notes e-Week.
At the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University, California, an ARM engineer said the next version of the company's Cortex A processor will support virtualisation technology, a feature that is particularly important for servers and data centres.
Dave Brash, ARM's architecture programme manager, said during his Hot Chips presentation the company is "very, very close to releasing that design".
Probe settles attack fears
The 4 May interruption of computer servers used by the Butler County Board of Elections was not due to a digital attack, a probe revealed, says Cincinnati.com.
Several subpoenas were obtained to check Cincinnati Bell Fuse.net IP addresses that overloaded the county's Web site during the primary election, temporarily preventing the tabulation of results.
No correlation among the addresses was found.
