Google has added a weather layer to Google Maps that displays current temperatures and conditions around the world.

The feature is already available and can be activated by opening Google Maps and clicking the link in the left-hand panel. Alternatively, it can be enabled by hovering over the widgets in the top right corner of the map window and ticking the “Weather” tab - one of several layer selections from a list that also includes Traffic, Transit, Photos, Terrain, Webcams, Wikipedia, Videos, Bicycling, Buzz, and Labels.

Another addition to Google Maps announced this week is the extension of Street View to some of the world's largest rivers.

“Soon you'll be able to float down the Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers of northwest Brazil and experience some of the most remote and biodiverse areas in the world,” says Karin Tuxen-Bettman, of Google Earth Outreach.

“For many outdoor enthusiasts, travellers and environmentalists, this creates an opportunity to experience the wonders of the Amazon, which will be accessible in a way they'd previously only dreamed about.”
