Hurricane Sandy has forced Google to call off its Nexus event, which was planned for later today, in New York City. Google has not yet confirmed a new date for the event.
Invitations had been sent out with the tagline: 'The playground is open.' Google was expected to unveil numerous new Nexus products including new Nexus 7 models, a new higher-end 10-inch Nexus tablet (co-branded with Samsung) and the rumoured LG Nexus 4 smartphone, together with the Android 4.2 operating system update.
The event was set to be Google's biggest Nexus event to date, with multiple product announcements that would place Google in a strong competitive position for the upcoming holiday season.
Google's event has not been the only one affected by Hurricane Sandy. Facebook has been forced to cancel two events it had planned, including an announcement around its new social gifting platform "Facebook Gifts". The social network was expected to reveal details around its new retail partnerships for the service which allows users to buy and send physical gifts to friends.
Hurricane Sandy is a Category 1 hurricane, with winds of 120kmph as of Sunday evening, spanning across 280km. The storm already claimed 65 lives in the Caribbean before heading up towards the US coast.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has reportedly ordered the evacuation of Lower Manhattan and the city's subway system has been shut down, bringing the city to a halt. The New York Stock Exchange will also close floor trading today and shift to an electronic-only system.
Forecasters have warned that Hurricane Sandy could collide with a cold front system from the West, becoming a "superstorm" that could ravage the US Eastern Seaboard for days.
