Google rolls out Nexus One

Google has unveiled the Nexus One, a device which the search engine giant hails as a super phone that converges with the Internet, reports MediaPost.

The Nexus One has a 3.7-inch display, 5-megapixel camera, WiFi and supports Google maps, Facebook integration and software that customises widgets.

In addition, every application on the device is voice-enabled, including the ability to create an e-mail, voice location or tweet on Twitter.

PC tablet: the next evolution

Several weeks before Apple is expected to weigh in with its multimedia tablet, HP has revealed the prototype of a slate-type computer during Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's address at the Consumer Electronics Show, states USA Today.

The HP multimedia device will be equipped with video player, e-reader and multitouch and is expected to be available this year.

Last year, Lenovo introduced a hybrid PC with a detachable screen that can function as a multitouch slate tablet or a clamshell laptop. Rory Read, president of Lenovo, says: "We are seeing the next wave of technology; the convergence of the Internet, WiFi and 3G connectivity and its impact on everything from smartphones to netbooks to slate computers.”

Smartphones to dominate 2013

One billion people will own a smartphone by 2013, according to a convergence report by Futuresource Consulting, says Tech Whack.

David Luu, senior market analyst at Futuresource, says: “Right now, the functionality and quality of dedicated products can far exceed that of multi-function gadgets. However, it won't be long before the continued rise of the smartphone will have a major impact on the handheld device landscape.”

Last year, mobile phone ownership exceeded four billion users; which equates to nearly 60% of the world's population. In addition, in 2009, smartphone sales represented 17% of total handset shipments.
