Google to build green centre

Web Host Industry Review.

The company said it would invest about $101 million to complete the new data centre, which will expand on its existing Dublin data centre space that is leased from a third party.

The search giant said Ireland's naturally cool climate contributed to its decision, as it will use outside air to cool equipment, instead of costly air-conditioning units, says The Guardian.

Google already operates one data centre in Dublin, where it employs 2 200 people. The new centre is designed to help Google keep up with the growing demand for storage due to cloud computing, but it will also help to power searches, Gmail and Google Maps.

It is thought the data centre will create 200 short-term jobs for construction workers, etc., and 30 long-term jobs for data centre staff. Google added that its data centres use half the energy other data centres use, according to Journal.

Google's investment is helping Ireland to further improve its reputation as a 'green silicon state'; many -based companies, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Zynga and Twitter, have chosen to locate their international headquarters in Ireland, mainly due to the very low corporation tax. The Irish jobs minister also said the cloud computing industry was offering Ireland a massive opportunity for economic growth.
