Google+ to get social games?
All Things Digital, a social game network might be on the cards.
However, the publication says a Google spokeswoman would not confirm that a social game network was in the works, but provided this statement: “It's important to keep in mind this is an ongoing project and this is just the beginning. We plan to add a lot of features and functionality to Google+ over time. We're just excited to get started.”
Over the past three years, Facebook has helped spawn a whole new category of games that allow you to play with your friends online.
Inside Social Games says a source code from the new social network points to an integration with games that resembles Facebook's current model for social games.
A line of code taken by an Engadget tipster reads “have sent you Game invites and more from Google+ Games.”
It's not really a shocker considering that Google was actively acquiring game developers like Slide and SocialDeck last year and has been recruiting for positions on a gaming team. The company also has a form page for developers interested in Google+ as a platform.
According to Mashable, the references to game invites and Google+ Games seem pretty clear. And while Google could always choose to scrap a Google+ Games product before its launch, we don't think that's what will happen here. The reason being Zynga, the creator of FarmVille, CityVille and many more social games.
Google invested more than $100 million in Zynga last year. The investment was designed to be part of a larger partnership, sources have told us. That partnership, we believe, will culminate with the launch of Google+ Games. And you can bet that Google+ will prominently feature games from the social gaming giant.
Inside Social Games says, if Google+ becomes a gaming platform, there could be some nice mobile and social overlap here with a uniform payments infrastructure underlying both the social network and Android. Before co-heading up the company's social efforts, consider that Vic Gundotra used to oversee the company's strategy with mobile apps.
