Google to merge Android, Chrome

Google claims Android and Chrome will eventually merge into one OS. In a statement, the search engine giant says while Google Android is mostly aimed at touch-based mobile devices, Chrome OS is designed for netbooks and PCs. However, Schmidt says ultimately, the two efforts will converge.

A report from PC World confirms this, saying Android's smartphone and tablet roadmaps will converge, following Schmidt's announcement that the first commercial Chrome OS devices will hit the market later this year.

The Wall Street Journal says Google Android was the star of the Mobile World Congress. However, during the event, concerns were expressed around a duopoly in the marketplace where Google and Apple would be maintaining power.

Carriers are relying on Android for hit smartphone devices, but worry about market concentration. However, Google says one of the reason the search engine giant has achieved high adoption is because it has removed all control.

According to GoMo News, a drawback is that Android is suffering from a proliferation of versions, as original equipment manufacturers customise Android for their own devices.
