DTPS deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize says government is considering the ICT council to ensure inclusive policy formation in the sector.

Government is investigating the feasibility of creating an integrated ICT research and innovation council for the sector, according to a statement.

The idea to establish an ICT research council was first suggested in 2007; however, further communication on the creation of such a council has been lacking.

According to a statement, discussions about the creation of an ICT council were back on the agenda at the GovTech conference in Durban this week, but no further details were revealed.

Deputy minister in the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS), Hlengiwe Mkhize, said government is considering creating the expert advisory group to ensure inclusive participation in formation and other issues of relevance in the ICT sector.

The ICT research council will aid government to address the research and development needed to drive the country's innovation into a knowledge economy, she said.

"Data, research and scientific evidence are essential in policy formulation ? hence the idea of a research council."
