A Pretoria-based assisting technology company has introduced a Canadian-developed satellite-based personal navigation system to the local market.

Aimed at blind users, the Humanware "Trekker" system provides turn-by-turn guidance to any destination selected, using South African map loaded on to a PDA fitted with a specially designed tactile keyboard.

"With accuracy down to as little as 3m, Trekker can pinpoint a user`s position, provide accurate spoken directions, and provide information about local attractions," says Neville Clarence, MD of Neville Clarence Technologies (NCT), the local distributor for Humanware.

Shortcut keys on the PDA also enable users to get information such as their speed, direction, distance to nearest point of interest, and even altitude, latitude and longitude, says Kingsley Preston, local product support manager.

NCT is based in Pretoria and has branch offices in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bellville.
