Samsung has teamed up with newly-formed Visiria to release its latest green offering - solar-powered billboards - for mass advertising.
Samsung says these solar-powered backlit billboards are world firsts and use only renewable resources to generate the electricity they need to operate.
The company believes these billboards are perfect for SA in the current climate, as no area can be totally assured of a constant power supply.
“Using this technology reduces our demand on electricity supplied by Eskom and furthermore lessens consumption of coal and other primary resources. SA is currently the 18th highest emitter of green house gases in the world, a position Samsung and its partners would greatly wish to lower,” Samsung said in a statement.
According to the company, the first phase of the project will see 30 billboards erected, which will result in an annual energy saving equivalent to the monthly energy consumption of 1 080 medium-sized households.
The advanced GSM mobile communication technologies and microcomputer also incorporated in the solution allows clients to monitor the value of their advertising instantly and the service and functioning of the billboard can itself be monitored and managed remotely, Samsung says.
