Green projects to save money

UK public sector ICT projects are looking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and saving almost £200 000 per year, reports Public Service.co.uk.

Salix Finance, which has provided loans for a variety public sector emission reduction programmes, has funded 11 public sector ICT related projects, which have a combined value of close to £500 000.

The largest of these initiatives was an IT virtualisation project at Wiltshire College, expected to save in excess of £333 000 and almost 2 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

SMEs look to SaaS

AMI Partners reveals small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) represent a significant opportunity for cloud services and software-as-a-service (SaaS), states, eWeek.

According to AMI research, worldwide SMEs have allocated 18% of their total software spending for SaaS. However, there are still hurdles for SMEs to overcome in order to reach this critical market, the report found.

Cloud-related information and communications technology spending is projected to account for a sizeable portion of total worldwide ICT spending by SMEs in 2010, says AMI senior associate Michael McDonald.

AVG, MokaFive partner

Offering a critical layer to the virtual desktop marketplace, AVG Technologies has entered into a partnership with MokaFive, a virtual desktop management company, reveals TMCnet.

To provide a solution for a secure virtual desktop, which, according to the companies, can be deployed directly on the end-user's personal machines, AVG Anti-Virus is now integrated into the MokaFive virtual desktop management suite.

This solution is said to make sure that sensitive corporate information contained in the virtual desktop is always kept safe and is said to enables enterprises to use AVG's free software to protect personal workspaces.
