Grey College Bloemfontein has commissioned a new computer centre with the assistance of CS Holdings. CS IT Solutions, the desktop and network solutions division of CS Holdings, designed and equipped the centre.

"Our old computer centre equipment was out of date and the venue was unsuitable," says Grey College IT manager Paul Potgieter. "We moved the centre to an area which would be easily accessible to visitors to the school so that we can market it for use by outside parties in off-peak times."

The new centre has 42 Pentium II 350 PC`s with CD-ROM drives, and head sets, running on Windows NT and Windows 98 across a 100 Mbps ethernet LAN infrastructure. Software packages installed include MS Office 2000 Professional, MS Encarta 99 Deluxe, Borland Turbo Pascal 1.5 for Windows, and EG Chess (network playable). An ISDN link to the will be installed next year. In addition, there are plans to put a PC in every classroom. A multimedia projector and sound system has also been installed for presentation purposes.

The IT Centre is being used for Computer Literacy classes, Computer Studies, screening of educational videos & subject support (Physical Science, Accounting, Biology etc.) Complementary projects being undertaken by Grey College include an outreach project to schools in previously disadvantaged areas in co-operation with Futurekids, whereby 20 pupils each from two local township schools will attend computer literacy classes at the centre on Saturdays.

CS IT Solutions in Bloemfontein was instrumental in the installation, providing Grey College with knowledge transfer regarding the best solution for the school`s requirements as well as undertaking the design and installation of the equipment.

CS IT Solutions has been involved in the installation of several computer centres at high schools in the area, notably Jim Fouche, Eunice, Sentraal, Oranje Meisies School, Fichardt Park and St Andrews, as well as several primary schools through an alliance with Futurekids. In addition, it has several tertiary educational clients including UOFS.
