Grintek Aviation Systems has signed a multimillion-rand deal to upgrade the Zambian National Airports Corporation`s VHF communications .

Len Collier, director of Grintek Aviation Systems, says three new sites at Lusaka, Ndola Kaloko and Mongu will be provided with civil infrastructure and equipment, and will be integrated into the existing system, centralised at the Lusaka International Airport.

"The three sites were selected to provide VHF coverage in areas where limited VHF communication was possible. Once the project is complete, air traffic controllers based at Lusaka International Airport will be able to communicate with any aircraft flying in the region," he says.

According to Collier, the project should be completed in April 2005, benefiting pilots and air traffic controllers in terms of efficiency and safe air traffic control.

Derik Van Heerden, Grintek Aviation Systems marketing manager, says while the exact size of the deal could not be disclosed, it is the second multimillion-rand contract that Grintek has won in Sub-Saharan Africa after a similar deal with the Botswana Directorate of Civil Aviation.

"Grintek is also hoping to win a contract in Mozambique. Smaller deals have also been conducted in Angola, Malawi, Uganda and Swaziland," he says.
