Grintek Telecom delivers PLC technology to Africa through Cybercom International partnership

Johannesburg, 06 Jan 2004

Information and communications technology (ICT) specialist Grintek Telecom has signed a partnership agreement with Cybercom International to distribute its latest Power Line Communications (PLC) solution into Africa. The agreement covers sales, implementation, support and training.

Says Phumlani Moholi, managing director of Grintek Telecom: "We identified the advantage of offering this relatively new technology to deliver telecommunication to full multimedia communication utilising the existing power distribution network. PLC systems enable the distribution of voice and data traffic using special modems, which connect directly to existing electricity distribution networks, using the power lines to carry IP signals.

"Our preference to partner with Cybercom International will deliver the distinct benefits associated with its solutions, such as power management - an important consideration for reducing costs and conserving energy. The patented architecture, which currently gives bandwidth of 45Mbps, provides the best transmission quality and resilience."

Says Laurence Smith, managing director of Cybercom International: "Grintek Telecom is our partner of choice for the African market as they provide a host of additional skills that ensure complete client satisfaction. Their approach and technical expertise ensures the provision of the highest level of scoping, implementation, support and training.

"PLC technology will see the proliferation of telecommunications and Internet connectivity at competitive costs. Power is available in nearly every single building or structure and PLC uses this existing infrastructure to carry an IP (Internet Protocol) signal."

"This has prompted the Tshwane Municipality to evaluate the InovaTech DS2 solution supplied through Cybercom International and Grintek Telecom. Tshwane has purchased a pilot system as part of its ongoing investigation into new technologies.

"The agreement between Grintek Telecom and Cybercom International will also provide opportunities for licensed telcos and operators to use this technology and offer the service in various sectors. Take for example the imminent legislation in the United Kingdom that requires all hospitals to provide telephony, Internet access and data links to each bed by 2006. Implementation of this without the necessity of cabling will prove to be a distinct advantage."

Moholi concludes: "The impact of his technology is far-reaching, for businesses, consumers and communities. Consider the opportunities for rural telephony and the alternative to separate cabling for businesses. It could allow telcos to deliver multimedia to end-users in a cost-effective way. This technology also opens the door to other areas of business such as video-on-demand."
