Grintek Telecom gears up for the future with Hypercom's multi-application PoS terminals

Johannesburg, 05 Feb 2004

Grintek Telecom's range of HypercomICE terminals is ready to handle the multi-application requirements with which merchants are being enticed, rendering a service to the consumer and creating revenue generation for the merchant, allowing them to recoup the rental and fees from traditional credit and debit card transactions.

Says Dushan Pillay, Hypercom product manager at Grintek Telecom: "There are many emerging applications for multi-application PoS terminals such as purchasing cellular phone air time and third-party payments. The demand for these additional services has seen the traditional 'credit card terminal' evolve to accommodate additional services, all on one terminal. Hypercom has provided a few distinct advantages to its range of ICE terminals."

"Hypercom has taken cognisance of this market and provides a range of multi-application PoS terminals that meets the requirements of the individual business. Its range of ICE terminals include options such as colour screens, a built-in credit check facility, speedy read/write functionality and wireless terminals that provide mobility."

The infrastructure for a PoS terminal requires a dial up connection from the terminal to the back-end system such as a banking institution, which may require many modems depending on the number of lines.

Hypercom's PoS terminals feature an integrated enterprise network (IEN) card that converts the incoming protocol to TCP/IP format and provides up to 90 simultaneous connections in a single chassis. This means where 90 modems were previously required, only one IEN chassis and interface is required saving a substantial amount of money for the service provider such as a financial institution.

The fastPOS functionality ensures transactions are complete within eight seconds opposed to up to 45 seconds, which is the norm on other PoS equipment.

According to Pillay, all Hypercom's terminals are smart card ready, as this technology will soon replace the traditional magnetic stripe technology that is currently used for credit and debit cards. The EMV card in Hypercom's PoS solutions ensures that smart card transactions will take no longer than 15 seconds.

"Hypercom's PoS facilitation of third-party transactions for payment to organisations such as SABC or Telkom assists to eliminate congestion on the network," says Pillay. "At the end of each working day, the transactions are batched and settlement is effected after business hours which effectively reduces traffic on the network."

Grintek Telecom, a distributor of the Hypercom product line, addresses these markets by supplying not only the product but also the necessary skills to implement the solution. Its team of skilled engineers, including software developers, provides a solution that is tailored to the client's requirements in addition to software develop kits (SDKs) if the organisation has its own in-house skills and resources.
