GuruHut extends offering with EJB workshop

Skills development and object-oriented specialist, GuruHut, has announced "Enterprise Java Beans: Developer Workshop" - a five-day course to introduce programmers to the Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and teach them to develop and deploy applications using it.

According to GuruHut director, Chris Nel, J2EE is a suite of components and technologies that enables organisations to develop scalable, robust enterprise systems in Java.

"It is the culmination of years of experience in software development across vertical industries and is rapidly replacing Cobol as the enterprise development language of choice."

GuruHut`s new course is a combination of lectures, workshops and practical exercises with more than half the time spent on practical implementation of the lessons learned. "This is to ensure that delegates gain a solid understanding of the complex concepts involved," he says.

"Enterprise Java Beans: Developer Workshop" covers the core concepts of J2EE, presents an overview of its various components and focuses on Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs). Delegates will learn how to implement:

  • Servlets - simple, consistent mechanisms for extending the functionality of Web servers and accessing existing business systems. A servlet can almost be thought of as a small application that runs on the server side - without a face.

  • JavaServer Pages (JSPs) - technology that allows Web developers and designers to rapidly develop and easily maintain, information-rich, dynamic Web pages that leverage existing business systems. It enables rapid development of platform-independent, Web-based applications, separating the user interface from content generation enabling designers to change the overall page layout without altering the underlying dynamic content.

  • Entity beans - EJBs that model persistent data - data typically stored in a database. This type of bean usually exists for as long as the data it is associated with exists.

  • Session beans - short-lived EJBs that model processes and provide services to particular user sessions.

"Enterprise Java Beans: Developer Workshop" is pitched at an intermediate level and has been specifically designed to guide students through building, verifying and deploying J2EE applications using the artefacts listed above.

"It is a technical offering and experience in Java as well as a solid understanding of the core concepts of object-orientation are required for a student to get the most out of it," says Nel.
