Handheld computing takes flight

Johannesburg, 03 Jun 2004

Thanks to a revolutionary new software application called eBirds, ornithologists are now able to enhance their hobby with the use of a handheld PC. Based on the original Sasol sponsored book, Birds of Southern Africa, bird lovers can now use a digital version with enhancements such as a search facility, sound, maps, and over 950 plates.

"The eBirds Field Guide is the first of many for us. It is a wonderful way to enhance a hobby and more importantly, to introduce new users to the wonders of handheld technology." Says Otto Werdmuller von Elgg, PDA Solutions.

Samantha Galliet, HP IPAQ product manager at Axiz believes that consumers are beginning to feel more comfortable with mobile technology. So much that they are now leveraging it in their leisure activities such as ornithology. "Mobile technology has enabled us to introduce new users to technology in ways they would have never dreamed of." Says Galliet. "90% of PDA Solutions` handheld customers have never used a PDA before and 60% of those have never owned a PC."

The adoption of mobile technology has led users to explore their options on a PDA. According to IDC, consumers who have adopted mobile solutions either within or outside of the home represent a unique segment to market next-generation technology and services to. The eBirds Field Guide has done just that, but what makes it even more unique is the fact that the users are primarily from an older generation.

Technology is a great enabler and plays a vital role in assisting technology adverse people such as the older generation to 'cross the digital divide`.

"The fact is a lot of these are people are scared of technology. This software, along with a handheld PC, opens up the world of computing without being too intimidating. They are then able to move on to using the PDA for email and other programs featured on a handheld computer," comments Galliet. Software applications such as the eBirds Field Guide and HP handheld PCs present a great opportunity for companies such as Axiz and PDA Solutions to market products to a brand new segment.
