Hard drives still dominate notebook space
Computer World writes.
SSD-based notebook PCs like Apple's MacBook Air and Microsoft's new Surface tablet PC pose no short-term threat to the much larger universe of hard drive-based mobile devices in a sluggish notebook business, according to the market research firm's report.
According to Channel Web, the market watcher said that in 2012's first quarter, notebooks with SDD storage and high-end HDD devices accounted for only 3% of the market combined.
Notebooks containing 500GB of HDD storage fared the best, achieving a 32% share of the market. Notebooks worth between $350 and $4500) with HDD storage larger than 320GB enjoyed 26% market share.
The analytics provider also noted that HDD-based notebooks have options of their own and more capacious and priced affordably, HDDs currently enjoy an advantage compared to the relatively low storage capacity of tablet PCs or the currently high price of SSD notebooks, writes CBR Online.
As such, HDD industry can continue to explore opportunities in the segments where hard disk drives count continuing support areas such as the enterprise space, security applications, external drives and the online cloud.
