Distributor Drive Control Corporation (DCC) and Western Digital have introduced the 250GB WD Scorpio 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives.
The mobile hard drive uses the highest capacity available in small form factor drive, and is aimed at notebooks and portable storage devices.
Using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve its capacity, the drive is also quiet, uses less power and runs at cool operating temperatures.
According to market research firm IDC, adoption of PMR technology in mobile 2.5-inch hard drives will sustain an increase in the average capacity shipped close to the average growth rate of 32% for the past five years. The firm states that by 2011, shipments of mobile 2.5-inch hard drives will more than double 2006 shipment volumes.
Says Jenny Rex, sales director of DCC: "Demand for 2.5-inch hard drives continues to increase at a rapid pace, driven by notebook computers, portable storage devices and consumer electronics products."
Although some of these hard drives are being used for external casing devices, Rex says most of the hard disks are being used for notebook upgrades: "If you think, roughly a year ago, the largest hard disk capacity was 80GB, [and now it stands at 250GB]."
The 250GB hard disk's suggested retail price is R1 870 (including VAT).
