The prevalence of high-definition (HD) televisions in households will boost the HD surveillance industry.
According to security business Axis, the trend that has seen the spread of HD surveillance network camera technology in the US will happen in SA. Locally, more people are buying HD TV sets that can be integrated into household networks and can function as a surveillance receiver.
"Computers and notebooks are now also being sold HD-ready and can receive the high-quality imaging from security cameras," says Roy Alves, country manager for Axis SA.
Axis has a 40% year-on-year growth rate in SA and estimates it holds around 49% of the market share in the country. Alves explains that the company has seen a boom in the deployment of HD solutions, specifically to large customers, such as shopping centres.
The technology is becoming more viable than old analogue solutions, which are less reliable, he explains. Even the most high-end analogue solutions can be degraded, by simply having a long cable to the camera. "The longer the cable, the more degraded the image."
Alves says HD solutions allow for more advanced features, since the entire solution is based in data. SA has a growing number of home digital networks that support HD throughput, and Alves is positive that the coming Soccer World Cup will see a boom in HD-ready TV sets.
Axis sees the increased focus on security and IP networks increase the number of people that will install the HD security systems in their homes. The demand is already on the rise, he concludes.
