The lyrics "Call me on the line, call me, call me any anytime" from Blondie`s hit single of the infamous 80`s, take on new meaning after Vodacom launched a free service enabling its Vodago prepaid users to stay in touch even after their airtime has expired.
"Call Me" is world first and allows Vodago prepaid users to send a free text message to other Vodacom customers requesting that the latter call them back.
"The service was developed for Vodago prepaid users with a zero airtime balance. However, Vodacom realised that it would also find favour with any cellular user on a tight budget and therefore opened up the service to our entire prepaid and contract customer base of some five million people," said Joan Joffe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom.
In the run-up to Valentine`s Day, what happens after the call is returned is another matter. However, cellular users can be sure of one thing: Vodacom won`t be footing the bill for any champagne and roses. "Maybe next year..." said Ms Joffe.
The product works as follows: A Vodacom customer would send what is known as a USSD message to another Vodacom customer requesting that the other person call them back. The command to send the message is *140*082123 4567# (Where 082 123 4567 is the cellphone number of the recipient). The command is `dialled` in the same way as dialling a standard telephone number. The recipient will receive the `Call Me` request as a standard SMS text message, with the sender`s cellphone number included.
`Call Me` messages can only be sent to other Vodacom customers.

Alternatively, Vodacom Customer Care can be reached on 082 111 from a Telkom line. Vodago prepaid users can make a free call to Vodago Customer Care on 114 from their Vodacom cellphones.
