Hitachi intros server-to-storage virtualisation

Hitachi Data Systems has released a server-to-storage virtualisation initiative to drive efficiencies across virtualised environments, reports CIOL.

To support this strategy, Hitachi Data Systems also released two business continuity and disaster recovery solutions for virtual environments - Hitachi Storage Cluster for Microsoft Hyper-V and Hitachi Storage Replication Adapter for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager.

Mark Bowker, analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, HDS says, "With the introduction of Hitachi Storage Cluster for Microsoft Hyper-V and Hitachi Storage Replication Adapter for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, Hitachi not only demonstrates this end-to-end capability but also its ability to integrate across virtualisation platforms.”

LaCie has introduced the Big Disk Network and d2 Network - network-attached servers for workgroups, according to PC World.

The d2 Network is available starting at $190, while the Big Disk Network costs $380.

The systems share many features: They can back up to external hard disks using USB 2.0 or eSata, work with Time Machine, and can stream multimedia content to a universal plug-and-play or DLNA-compatible player.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison says he won't sell off Sun Microsystems' data storage business, according to Enterprise Storage Forum.

"We are definitely not going to exit the hardware business. If a company designs both hardware and software, it can build much better systems than if they only design the software. That's why Apple's iPhone is so much better than Microsoft phones," Ellison says.

Ellison says he intends to hold on to Sun's data storage and tape backup businesses, creating a new competitor for the likes of EMC, IBM, HP, Hitachi Data Systems and NetApp.
