Damaged cables have temporarily put a stop to verification of smart IDs and passports.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has confirmed its online verification system, HANIS, is down due to damaged cables.

HANIS enables the cross-reference of fingerprints and identification information.

In a statement, the DHA notes the damage to cables resulted in a power failure at the department's new co-operation building where the system is located.

The department add systems that require HANIS verification such as live capturing of smart ID cards as well as passports have been affected.

"Electricians have been working all night to replace the cables, while the home affairs IT team is on standby to restore the server. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and wish to reiterate our commitment to providing a quality service to our clients," says the DHA.

The department expects systems to be up later today.
