How much to oversee the ?

How much do you think it costs to oversee the Internet per year? According to newly released budget figures from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), reports The Register, it costs $6 million.

The online IT news magazine arrives at comparable figures for three supervisory organisations by dividing the budget by the number of staff. Doing this gives lb80 000 in the case of Nominet, lb85 000 for Oftel and lb99 000 for ITU. The same calculation for ICANN gives a figure of lb112 000 this year and lb133 000 next year. Open source boost

A think tank advocating the use of open source software in governments is launching a source-code escrow programme that would let vendors make money on proprietary software while eventually releasing their products to the open source community.

The Open Source Threshold Escrow Program would create goodwill for software vendors trying to sell products to government agencies and large companies afraid of proprietary vendor lock-in, says Tony Stanco, creator of the program, known as O-STEP. Corel has said it might consider O-STEP for its WordPerfect Office suite. [IDG News Service]
