The results were confirmed by tests carried out by the independent testing house SpencerLab, a division of Spencer & Associates, on the HP DesignJet 3000CP and HP DesignJet 3500CP printers. These tests involved the deployment of three different external RIPs with the HP DesignJet 3000CP printers, and in each case the combination of printer and external RIP achieved higher print speeds with high resolution (600dpi) output.
The HP DesignJet 3500CP printer was tested with its built-in Adobe PostScript 3 RIP. All three of the external RIPs, from Amiable Technologies Inc. (Photoprint), IMAGE Technologies (WISP PS), and Onyx Graphics (Postershop), were fine-tuned using Varware, the print job control language developed by HP for its HP DesignJet CP Series printers. Varware allows RIP vendors to control the print modes, enabling the operator to define specific print requirements such as the carriage speed, resolution or number of passes.
Productivity-tuned RIPS also benefit from the new wide print mask (240 x 256 pixel) capability of the HP DesignJet CP printers. These print masks allow faster printing at a superior image quality than the standard (240 x 32 pixel) native masks.
HP will continue, through the RIP speed project for the HP DesignJet CP Series printers, to work with vendors so that they can take advantage of the productivity-tuned Varware for optimal throughput. HP will provide RIP manufacturers with support in developing and testing their Varware RIP solutions. Vendors interested in participating in the RIP speed project will follow HP test guidelines to qualify their products as Printing Speed Optimised RIPs for HP DesignJet CP printers. HP DesignJet 3000CP Series printers offer customers more than just high speeds and photo-quality images. They also provide a cost-effective printing solution with efficient ink usage and lower media costs, all combining to enhance the overall productivity of the printer. A number of automation features also make their contribution to productivity, such as the automatic detection of defective nozzles and the automatic ink replacement system.
