Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced the HP JetDirect 400N print server, extending the latest Internet printing functionality and customer benefits to a broad installed base of more than 9 million Modular Input Output-based printers.
The HP JetDirect 400N is the first MIO print server to offer support for the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), a protocol co-developed by HP to create a standard method of sending print jobs to Internet-connected printers.
The print server maximises investments made in MIO-based printers, such as the LaserJet 4Si and LaserJet 5 printers, by improving printer performance and offering unparalleled investment protection through advanced features such as upgradable firmware, an embedded Web-server and remote management with HP Web JetAdmin.
Internet-enabled Customer Solutions Printing via the Internet is paving the way for an entirely new document delivery model, extending users` reach beyond the LAN to any printer connected to the Internet. HP JetDirect print servers were the first to offer an IPP-compliant Internet printing solution.
"The Internet has dramatically changed the way our customers do business, and network printing is no exception," said Wim Heunick, marketing manager for Peripherals, HP South Africa. "Our customers, whether networking peripherals for the first time or upgrading their network connections with the new HP JetDirect 400N MIO print server, are poised to take advantage of the new distribute-and-print paradigm."
Breadth of Connectivity The HP JetDirect 400N family of internal print servers is designed for use with Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Token Ring networks, and also offers industry-leading multiprotocol and multi-NOS support.
Automatic switching between 10Base-T and 100Base-T, and automatic negotiation between full- and half-duplex data-transfer modes maximises performance in any Ethernet environment.
With 2MB of flash memory, the print server`s firmware can be upgraded to support future product enhancements, thus protecting the hardware investment made in both the printer and the print server.
Simple Printer Installation and Management HP offers simple in-box installation software in addition to Web-based management and automatic installation utilities available free of charge at www.hp.com/go/networkprinting.
HP`s Network Printer Installer for Windows NT(R) 4.0 is a server-based utility that can automatically recognise and install new printers as they are added to the network. The IT manager can select full automation, or use an easy, step-by-step wizard. With full automation, all the end user has to do is take the printer out of the box and plug in the network cable, and the printer is ready for sharing.
HP Web JetAdmin is the industry`s leading Web-based peripheral-management software offering many powerful features, including universal printer support; simplified network-printer installation, configuration and management; remote printer management; enterprise management integration; and features designed to reduce help-desk calls, such as proactive alerts.
Pricing and Availability HP JetDirect 400N print servers are expected to be available from March 1 1999. The unit comes with a limited one-year, return-to-HP warranty and, if bundled with or installed in a printer with an on-site warranty, assumes the same warranty as the printer.
According to industry analysts, HP is the recognised leader in connecting and managing printers on networks. Since 1991, HP has sold more than 9 million HP JetDirect internal and external print servers, and provides the industry-leading printer-management software, HP Web JetAdmin, making it the world`s leading supplier of network printing solutions.
