HP introduces powerful, new printer family to replace world`s most popular departmental printers

The HP LaserJet 8000 Printer Offers Faster Processing, Simple Network-peripheral Management, Mopying Capabilities and RIP-once Technology
Johannesburg, 05 May 1998

Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced the LaserJet 8000 family of departmental printers which replace the industry leading HP LaserJet 5Si printer series. Powered by a 133 MHz processor and 16MB base memory, the 24 page-per-minute LaserJet 8000 printers deliver fast, high-quality output with simple network peripheral management, versatile paper handling and mopying capabilities. The recent introductions of the HP LaserJet 4000, HP LaserJet 5000, and now the LaserJet 8000 allow HP to provide customers with a full range of printers for a variety of printing needs. "These new printers are designed to minimise the MIS/LAN manager`s involvement in the printing process and improve the efficiency of the end user," said Steve Midgley, Hewlett-Packard product marketing manager, printers and peripherals. "This is accomplished, to a large extent, by leveraging the ground-breaking technologies found in our award-winning HP LaserJet 4000 printer, as well as expanding the user`s paper handling options." Mopy-enabled Building on the capabilities of the LaserJet 4000 printer series to create multiple original prints of a document (mopies) efficiently, the LaserJet 8000 printer incorporates new RIP-once technology for faster output and quicker return to application. Transmit-once technology allows multiple original prints to be made without increasing network traffic. This means users can bypass a trip to an office copier and print directly from their desktop. In addition to faster throughput, the LaserJet 8000 printers offer all the paper handling options of its predecessor, the LaserJet 5Si printers, plus two new accessories: two 500-sheet multiple-input trays and a seven-bin tabletop mailbox. For departments with diverse printing needs, the LaserJet 8000 printer can be equipped with up to six input sources, two-sided printing and a mailbox with stapler. Advanced Technologies Along with the dynamic RIP-once technology, the LaserJet 8000 printer family includes a number of technological advancements not found in the LaserJet 5Si printer. These technologies enable higher print quality, faster job completion, simple network-peripheral management, and include the following: * HP FastRes 1200 technology - provides 1,200-dpi-quality text and images at full engine speed; * PostScript Level 2 emulation - the fastest, most memory-efficient PostScript-compatible solution ever offered standard in an HP LaserJet printer; * Enhanced Input/Output (EIO) Architecture - a higher-performance I/O architecture, based on a 32-bit, PCI-based bus, which is designed to handle the increased bandwidth requirements of today`s evolving hardcopy applications, including high-resolution, color and graphic-intensive printing; * PCL 6 - for faster printing of complex graphics, quicker return to application and improved font and image fidelity; * HP Web JetAdmin 4.0 - a peripheral-management software package that gives network administrators the ability to install, configure, monitor and trouble-shoot network printers remotely; * New HP JetDirect 600N print server - the new JetDirect 10/100Base-TX print server for EIO boosts network printing performance by enabling data throughput speeds of up to twice that of HP`s MIO print servers. The print server provides 10Base-T connectivity today and the ability to move to 100Base-TX in the future; and * HP JetSend technology - device-to-device communications technology that enables intelligent information exchange among printers, scanners and a broad range of information appliances. Pricing, Configurations and Availability Three configurations of LaserJet 8000 printers are now available worldwide, with the following estimated retail prices: * LaserJet 8000 printer - base model with 16MB RAM, two 500-sheet trays and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray - R * LaserJet 8000 N printer - network model with 16MB RAM, two 500-sheet trays, a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 10/100 Base-T JetDirect card - R * LaserJet 8000 DN printer - duplex model with 24MB RAM, two 500-sheet trays, a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, a 10/100 Base-T JetDirect card and duplex unit, R
