Scaleable and Highly Available Data Protection for High-end Server Backup

Hewlett-Packard Company has announced the HP SureStore TapeRack, a high performance data protection solution for mission-critical applications.

HP SureStore TapeRack is a rack-mounted tape enclosure designed to support up to four cradle-mounted DAT or DLT "r" (removable) drives and fits within a standard 19-inch rack. This product extends the HP SureStore range of storage products and meets the needs of the data centre and enterprise customer. It is an ideal solution for high-end servers including the HP NetServer LXr product family, is highly reliable, and is fully supported by leading backup software applications including Computer Associates` ARCserve 6.5 and Seagate`s Backup Exec 7.0.

Key benefits of the HP SureStore TapeRack are as follows:

Scalability - The HP SureStore TapeRack allows for the gradual growth of a system from 24GB (using a single HP SureStore Tape DAT24r drive) to 280GB (using four HP SureStore DLT70r drives). Drive types can be mixed, so users can start with DAT and gradually migrate to DLT as capacity and performance needs grow.

High availability - The HP SureStore TapeRack offers 24-hour-a-day uninterrupted backup operation. It features hot-swap tape drives and dual redundant hot-swap power supplies which can be replaced without interrupting TapeRack operations, ensuring maximum up-time.

Manageability - HP TapeAlert continually monitors the state of the tape drives, power supplies and fans to ensure they are operating efficiently, and keeps users informed of any media or maintenance required via messages sent to the TapeAlert-compatible backup application.

High performance - The HP SureStore tape drives available for TapeRack provide a range of high-performance options for data storage from the 2MB/s transfer rate of the DAT24r to the 10MB/s delivered by a single DLT 70r. Dual ultrawide SCSI buses enable streaming from two channels, allowing backup of up to 144GB per hour for four DLT70r drives operating simultaneously, reducing the time required to perform a backup operation. HP SureStore tape can be configured using Computer Associates` ARCserve 6.5 and Seagate`s Backup Exec 7.0, which support mirroring or RAIT (Redundant Arrays of Independent Tapes) to enhance performance.

Initially, HP SureStore TapeRack is slated to be supported by the above software applications, and HP will continue to work with independent software vendors to provide further enterprise solutions for HP SureStore TapeRack.

HP SureStore TapeRack enclosures include an industry-leading, three-year on-site limited warranty, user documentation, mounting-rail kit, power cords, external SCSI cables and SCSI terminators.

HP`s Information Storage Group, which focuses on the rapidly growing extended storage market, manufactures and sells information storage products based on tape, magneto-optical and CD-RW technologies. HP storage solutions include digital-audio-tape (DAT) and digital-linear-tape (DLT) drives and libraries, minicartridge (QIC) tape drives and software, CD-ReWritable drives, and magneto-optical jukeboxes. These products are sold through a variety of distribution channels under the HP SureStore and HP Colorado brand names, as well as to OEM customers.
