HP launches HP SureStore TapeRack enclosure for rackmount servers

Solution provides scalable and highly available data protection for high-end-server backup
Johannesburg, 19 Mar 1998

Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced the HP SureStore TapeRack, a high-performance data protection solution for mission-critical applications. HP SureStore TapeRack, which extends the HP SureStore range of storage products, is a feature-rich rack-mounted tape enclosure designed to support up to four drives in a space-saving 19-inch enclosure. Special removable (`r`) versions of HP`s highest-performing drives, the HP SureStore DLT 70r, HP SureStore DLT 40r and HP SureStore DAT 24r, are available for use with the enclosure. With a scalable capacity of 24GB to 280GB (with data compression), HP SureStore TapeRack is designed to meet growing storage requirements; additional drives can be added at any time. Everything about HP SureStore TapeRack is designed for hassle-free data protection. Offering high availability, HP SureStore TapeRack enables the hot-swapping of each `r` drive within the enclosure. The hot-swap capability, which eliminates the need for powering down when a drive has to be removed or added, reduces server and backup-system downtime. The power supply units can also be hot-swapped, ensuring even higher system availability. HP SureStore TapeRack is covered by an industry-leading three-year on-site limited warranty, which means a HP technical support team can be on-site by the next working day, if a problem occurs. HP SureStore TapeRack`s dual ultra-wide SCSI buses enable streaming from two channels, allowing backup of up to 144GB per hour for four drives operating simultaneously. This feature is ideal for completing backups in a minimum amount of time. Able to meet the backup needs of either one or two servers, HP SureStore TapeRack can be configured in a variety of ways that support mirroring and RAIT (redundant array of independent tapes): -- single SCSI bus configuration with up to four HP SureStore DLT 40r, HP SureStore DLT 70r or HP SureStore DAT 24r drives on a single server -- dual SCSI bus, allowing any two drives on each of the two buses for optimum performance on a single server -- two independent servers, which can be connected to separate SCSI buses, thus supporting any drive combination. Initially, HP SureStore TapeRack will be supported by Computer Associates`s ARCserve 6.5 and Seagate Backup Exec 7.0. HP will continue to work with software providers to provide enterprise solutions for HP SureStore TapeRack. LED indicators provide simple diagnostic information on the status of the drives and power supplies. Located on the front panel of the HP SureStore TapeRack, the LEDs provide an early warning system to identify problems such as a power supply failure and help prevent system downtime. HP SureStore TapeRack comes complete with mounting rails, power cords, external SCSI cables, SCSI terminators, a user-friendly manual, and clear diagrammatic support for mounting the drives. HP SureStore TapeRack products are expected to be available July 1 through authorised resellers and distributors world-wide. HP`s Information Storage Group, which focuses on the rapidly growing extended storage market, manufactures and sells information storage products based on tape, magneto-optical and CD-RW technologies. HP storage solutions include digital-audio-tape (DAT) drives and digital-linear-tape (DLT) libraries, minicartridge (QIC) tape drives and software, CD-ReWritable drives, and magneto-optical drives and jukeboxes. These products are sold through a variety of distribution channels under the HP SureStore and HP Colorado brand names, as well as to OEM customers. HP is the official information technology hardware and maintenance supplier to the 1998 World Cup soccer tournament. Selected for its technology and skills to support and manage mission-critical applications, HP will help create an information-management
