HP opens Singapore cloud lab

HP is opening a research lab in Singapore as part of its plans to invest in centres in the Asia-Pacific region, states Information Week.

Prith Banerjee, senior VP of research and director of HP Labs, says: "Cloud is one of the eight pillars of future computing that we've identified.”

Last year, HP introduced the Open Cirrus project in Singapore to create a multi-data centre, open source test bed for the advancement of cloud computing.

MS, Panasonic sign patent deal

Microsoft has inked a patent-licensing agreement with Panasonic, reports V3.

The deal will give Panasonic access to Microsoft's File Allocation Table (FAT) and extended FAT (exFAT) file management system. FAT is used to manage on a storage device.

David Kaefer, Microsoft GM of intellectual property licensing, says: "Microsoft's exFAT file system technology is designed to enhance multimedia experiences for consumers, which is especially important as televisions and other consumer electronic devices are moving far beyond traditional media content.”

VMware improves virtualised data centres

VMware is acquiring software products and expertise from EMC's Ionix IT management business to improve virtualised data centre management, says CNN Money.

The all-cash transaction of up to $200 million is expected to close in the second calendar quarter of 2010, and is not expected to have a material impact on either EMC's or VMware's previous expectations for 2010.

Paul Maritz, president and CEO, VMware, says: "The acquisition of these Ionix products and expertise promises to further establish VMware vCenter as the next-generation management platform for private cloud infrastructures."
