HP provides key functionality to first Bluefin storage prototype

Company reinforces commitment to storage standards with CIM-SAN-1
Johannesburg, 13 Nov 2002

HP has demonstrated several Bluefin implementations with the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) as part of "CIM-SAN-1".

HP is a leader in developing the standards, which will provide customers simplified management of heterogeneous storage area networks.

CIM-SAN-1 consists of storage systems from multiple storage vendors enabled to work together and be managed through the Bluefin-based interfaces.

The Bluefin prototype was developed to accelerate the adoption of the specification and provide a forum to test the implementation of the specification to ensure interoperability.

"HP is dedicated to providing customers choice through open standards and is working with SNIA to bring this standard to market quickly," said Mark Sorenson, vice-president and general manager, HP Storage Software. "HP embraced CIM/WBEM from the beginning and is currently shipping early implementations of a CIM proxy with HP StorageWorks CommandView XP and CommandView SDM. The demo extends our CIM capabilities to include our newest arrays and the capabilities of HP OpenView storage software."

HP is providing several elements of the demo in compliance with standards set by SNIA:

* The HP OpenView Storage Area Management software suite allows customers seamless integrated storage resource and infrastructure management through a single view. It was chosen to be used in the CIM-SAM-1 demo for its ability to consume and display a unified perspective of the storage in the data centre, in this case to the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and HP StorageWorks VA 7400, through a single view or "pane of glass".

* The HP StorageWorks EVA, the newest generation of the StorgeWorks disk array family, and the HP StorageWorks VA 7400 provide detailed logical and physical configuration information and events. In the case of the VA 7400, LUN configuration, Business Copy (snapshot) configuration and LUN masking configuration also will be provided.

A Bluefin interface for HP`s Ultrium LTO tape libraries. This will provide information on the library configuration including tape drives and tapes.
