HP provides power punch for African SMEs

Johannesburg, 23 Apr 2002

Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in Africa are set to benefit from the introduction of HP server and storage solutions based on IA-32, the 32-bit Internet Architecture that characterises Intel processor servers running Microsoft Windows-based applications.

The solutions comprise five high speed Intel servers and one highly-available storage subsystem - the hp server 2110, 3100, 4100, 6100 and 7100 models, as well as the hp Surestore Disk System 2300. Taken together, they represent some of the lowest maintenance and easy-to-operate solutions that HP has released to date.

"When designing these solutions we kept a few key things in mind: maximising users` uptime, increasing the efficiency of an operation and driving down costs," explains Thierry Boulanger, the regional sales manager for English-speaking Africa at HP.

"The result was servers and storage that helps companies in Africa keep their IT operations running at affordable prices ... the solutions are also easy to deploy, backup, troubleshoot and expand."

The IA-32-based devices are also designed to strengthen what HP refers to as an `always-on Internet infrastructure` - that is, the network and ICT backbone which powers a company`s Internet access and presence. HP sees this as key to the future of ICT across Africa and, indeed, the world.

From a server point of view, HP`s latest offerings provide the versatility, reliability, price, performance and high-availability that competitive SMEs need to succeed. From a storage standpoint, the HP Surestore Disk System 2300 offers mid-range enterprise customers up to 1 terabyte of storage in a 3U (13cm) high enclosure.

"The servers can power even the most demanding of SMEs and the storage system makes data accessible at almost all times, even during most upgrades and repairs," adds Boulanger.

SMEs in Africa will also have access to software that complements the new range of servers.

"Our `rapid deployment` software helps customers deploy and install local or remote Windows/Linux servers from a single desktop or notebook PC. And our `plug-and-play` Linux software simplifies the deployment of IA-32 servers based on the Linux operating system by automatically recognising the device when it`s attached to the network for the first time," explains Boulanger.

"We expect this software - when combined with our new server and storage solutions - to bring serious performance and return-on-investment benefits to our customers across Africa."
