Jukeboxes Store More Than a Terabyte of Data @Story = Hewlett-Packard Company has announced the availability of its 5.2GB-based magneto-optical jukebox family. These HP SureStore optical-storage jukeboxes provide twice the data-storage capacity and faster transfer rates at a much lower cost per gigabyte than the 2.6GB models. The backward compatibility gives users read access for three generations and write access for one generation. The new 5.2GB (8x) family of jukeboxes provides permanent storage and much faster shared access to large amounts of reference data, enabling better customer service and back-office productivity. The term "8x" refers to an eight-fold increase over the 650MB (1x) capacity of the original magneto-optical disks introduced in 1989. These jukeboxes are targeted at industries in which long-term, durable and permanent storage are major client concerns, such as accounting, banking, legal, customer service, healthcare and government. "Magneto-optical has proven to be the technology of choice for permanently storing large data files," said Ivan Kraemer, HP marketing manager, information storage group. "With HP`s decade of 5.25-inch MO experience, these new 5.2GB-based (8x) jukeboxes reflect the performance, standards and dependability that customers have come to expect from a market leader." The new HP 5.2GB-based jukeboxes provide cost-effective solutions for document and image management, computer output to laser disk (COLD), archival-data storage and data migration. By working closely with leading software companies, HP has support for the 5.2GB-based products to offer customers a complete data-management solution. The following is a partial list of companies that already support, or are planning to support, the new family of HP optical-storage products: * Camino Software Systems, Inc. * Computer Associates * Diamond Head Software * Eastman Software * Filemark Corporation * FileNET Corporation * INSCI Corporation * Kofax Image Products * KOM, Incorporated * Optika Imaging Systems * Optisys, Inc. * OTG Software * Pegasus Disk Technologies * QStar Technologies * Software Architects * Tracer Technologies, Inc. * Westbrook Technologies, Inc. "The proven reliability and dependability of HP technology are key to providing our customers with long-term storage solutions they can trust," said Kraemer. "Add to that faster access to huge quantities of data and cost efficiency, and you have an ideal solution in the new 5.2GB systems." Features and Benefits * HP-developed robotics technology for automated data access frees IT managers for more critical tasks and decreases the potential for human error. * Drives can be replaced online, eliminating the need for downtime. * Electronic upgrades provide the user with incremental capacity that is easy to install and begin using. * Unlike 12-inch and 14-inch form-factor jukeboxes, these jukeboxes require no periodic maintenance. * Current 2.6GB-jukebox owners can purchase conversion kits to migrate from 2.6GB-based jukeboxes to valid 5.2GB-based jukeboxes. * Backward compatibility allows read/write functionality on 5.2GB and 2.6GB cartridges, and read-only functionality on 1.3GB and 650MB cartridges. Product Family HP offers a complete family of 5.2GB-based optical products. The products range in capacity from 5.2GB in a desktop unit to 1.2TB in a jukebox product. HP`s jukeboxes allow users to choose storage capacity (from 80GB to 1.2TB), number of drives (from 1 to 10) and number of cartridge slots (from 16 to 238) to meet their growing storage requirements. Upgrade kits also are available to add drives and/or cartridge slots to increase capacity as needed. Supported media includes rewritable and WORM formats in 2048, 1024 and 512 bytes per sector.
