HP reduces carbon footprint

HP Australia says it has reduced the carbon footprint of its Imaging & Printing Group (IPG) after revising its model, according to ProPrint.

The company claims to have reduced carbon emissions on products sourced by sea freight by 41%, after shifting its product port-of-entry from Fremantle to Melbourne and Sydney in order to be closer to most of its customers on the eastern seaboard, thus cutting down rail and road freight usage.

Previously, all IPG hardware was being delivered nationally from HP's central office (CDO) in Sydney, with 40% of all supplies landing in Fremantle and then being delivered via rail to customers across Australia. Some 40% of hardware from the CDO was also being delivered to Melbourne by truck. Previous truck deliveries from the CDO were not optimised to use larger trucks and HP was estimated to have emitted 6 400 tonnes of CO2 in 2008.

INM reorganises printing assets

Independent News & Media (INM) has completely reorganised its print and production assets in Ireland, says the Belfast Telegraph.

The group's three leading print and production facilities are to be managed as a single, combined entity.

Vincent Crowley, group COO, says: "This new structure allows for a dedicated focus for all of our print and production activities across the island of Ireland. Managing the three plants as one unit will deliver significant efficiencies, improved time to market for our customers, as well as combining best practice production techniques from each of the facilities."

Wireless printing iPhone app

Canon is to release a photo printing application that will enable photo printing from an iPhone or iPod touch to a compatible Canon Pixma printer, reports Smarthouse.

Canon Australia's brand manager for Pixma, Beryl Thomas, says: "Canon continues to make the photo printing experience as seamless and easy as possible with the addition of new technologies such as the Canon Easy-Photo Print Application.

"This new application opens up the photo printing possibilities for iPhone or iPod Touch users who can now easily print from their device while enjoying creative control over high quality output options," adds Thomas.
